Matcha Hibiscus Mix

Bending the earthy, umami flavour of matcha with the tart, floral notes of hibiscus tea. This vibrant drink combines the rich green of matcha with the deep red of hibiscus, creating a visually striking and refreshing beverage that can be served hot or iced.

Instructions:

  • Steep 1 tbsp dried hibiscus flowers in 4 oz of hot water (200°F) for 5–7 minutes. Strain the flowers and set the deep red tea aside.
  • Sift 1 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps. Add 2 oz of hot water (160°F). Whisk vigorously in a “W” motion until smooth and frothy, forming a paste-like consistency. Set aside.

For a Hot Latte:

  • Heat ½ cup of milk over medium heat until warm (not boiling).
  • Froth the milk using a handheld frother or by whisking vigorously for a creamy texture. For an iced latte, skip heating and use cold milk, frothing lightly.
  • Pour the hibiscus tea into a tall glass or mug.
  • Add the frothed milk, stirring gently to blend the red colour with the milk, creating a pinkish hue.
  • Slowly pour the matcha over the top for a layered green-over-pink effect. Stir before drinking to combine flavours.

For an Iced Latte:

  • Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour the cold milk over the ice, followed by the hibiscus tea, creating a swirling red-pink effect.
  • Top with the matcha layer for a green-red contrast. Stir before drinking.

Matcha hibiscus latte is rich in antioxidants from both matcha and hibiscus, with a moderate caffeine kick from matcha making it a refreshing and energising drink.
