Matcha Blue Pea Flower Mix
Combining the vibrant green of matcha with the striking blue hue of butterfly pea flower tea for a visually stunning and flavourful drink. This recipe balances the earthy, umami notes of matcha with the mild, floral taste of blue pea flower tea, creating a refreshing and antioxidant-rich beverage. It can be served hot or iced.
Instructions:
- Steep 5–7 dried butterfly pea flowers in 4 oz (118 ml) of hot water (205°F, 96°C) for 5–7 minutes. Strain the flowers and set the vibrant blue tea aside.
- Sift 1 tsp of matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps. Add 2 oz of hot water (160°F, 70°C). Whisk vigorously in a “W” motion until smooth and frothy, forming a paste-like consistency. Set aside.
For hot latte:
- In a small saucepan, heat ½ cup of milk over medium heat until warm (not boiling). Add sweetener and vanilla extract (if using). Stir until dissolved.
- Froth the milk using a handheld frother or by whisking vigorously for a creamy texture.
- Pour the blue pea flower tea into a tall glass or mug.
- Add the frothed milk, stirring gently to blend the blue colour with the milk.
- Slowly pour the matcha over the top for a layered effect. Stir before drinking to combine flavours.
For an iced latte:
- Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
- Pour the cold milk over the ice, followed by the blue pea flower tea, creating a swirling blue effect.
- Top with the matcha layer for a green-blue contrast. Stir before drinking.
This latte is rich in antioxidants from both matcha and blue pea flowers, caffeine-free from the blue pea, and calming, making it great for any time of day.
